  1. Katharine,

I just read your article on Sympatico (about raccoon dogs in China). The majority of the article is very informative and the concepts in it chilling, but I am disturbed by the “opinion” aspects vs. the “news” perspective of the story. I have noted this trend in many of the news articles that I have seen on the net… the drift from news to opinion. Is it your editor that is push – or at least allowing this trend? Did your instructors in journalism school permit this? (Mine didn’t… we were taught to ONLY report the news… opinion was saved for the Editorial page.) Is this now the style or am I just “old fashioned?” Any way, good story… but please dump the “opinionating.”

  2. Hi Bruce,
Thanks for your comment. I’m glad you read the article and found it informative. The reason it’s opinion is because it’s in a blog format. The intention is for each blogger to have a personality and a point of view (the same way opinion page writers do) so their readers get to know them. I think, especially with a story like this one, sharing my opinion might help people change their ways and stop buying fur or imitation fur. I also prefer to write opinion and feature pieces because it’s more my style. I find it helps generate conversation – whether people agree with me or not. I’m not planning to change my writing style, because I personally think it’s better (there goes my opinion again!) but I hope you’ll continue reading anyways :)
    Thanks again for your feedback!
